Empadronamiento Certificate
If you’ve just arrived in Spain, one of the very first documents you’ll need is the empadronamiento certificate. This is your official registration at a local address, and you must complete it within one month of arriving. It may feel overwhelming at first, but don’t worry, once you know the steps, the process becomes much easier. Here’s everything you need to know to secure your empadronamiento and start your new life in Spain.
Why the Empadronamiento Is So Important
The empadronamiento is required for many essential processes, including:
- Your TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) appointment.
- Access to public health services.
- Other administrative paperwork connected to your stay.
Without it, you won’t be able to move forward with the rest of your legal and academic requirements.
Step 1: Find a Place to Live
Before you can register, you need a valid address in Spain. Here are some tips:
- Start looking before arriving: set up virtual interviews and viewings.
- Once you’re in Spain, visit the places in person and decide quickly.
- Ask your landlord if you can register at the property with your rental contract.
- Note: the rental contract usually needs to be at least one year.
Step 2: Prepare the Required Documents
For your empadronamiento appointment, you will need:
- Your application form.
- The appointment confirmation.
- Your passport.
- Your rental contract.
Step 3: Book Your Appointment Online
Appointments are made through the official Madrid city council website. Here’s the process:
- Go to the online appointment system.
- Select Padrón (empadronamiento) → then choose the option that starts with Altas (new registration).
- Pick the office you’d like to go to.
- Fill in your details and confirm the booking.
- You’ll receive a confirmation email, download it and include it with your documents.
⚠️ Tip: Don’t confuse Padrón with other options that look similar. Make sure you choose the one marked Altas.
Step 4: Attend Your Appointment
Bring all your documents with you to the chosen office. Once processed, you’ll be registered at your address, and your empadronamiento certificate will be ready.
It may feel intimidating at first, but remember, thousands of students and newcomers complete this process every year. As long as you’re prepared, it’s straightforward.

Next Steps After the Empadronamiento
Once you have your certificate, you can move forward with:
- Your NIE/TIE application.
- Registering for Spanish Healthcare. We explain the full process in our blog.
- Other student paperwork (see the EU Your Europe portal for residence rights and requirements).
