The Auxiliares Program Collapsed. Your Plan to Stay in Madrid Hasn’t.
BLC Spain and TtMadrid give displaced auxiliares a fully legal path to live and teach in Madrid, built on accredited programs, not government promises.
The 2026 Auxiliar Crisis: Your Official Guide to Legal Residency & Teaching in Madrid
The Auxiliares Program Just Collapsed Here is What You Actually Need to Know
If you have spent the last few months dreaming about moving to Spain as a language assistant, we understand how gut-wrenching the past few weeks have been. The Auxiliares de Conversación program (a pathway that has helped thousands since 2005) has effectively collapsed for the 2026-2027 school year across Madrid, Andalusia, and Valencia.
Spain isn’t closed. Your path just changed. While major providers like CIEE, ConversaSpain, and RVF International have suspended their programs, your dream of living in Madrid is not over. At BLC Group, we provide the legal and academic infrastructure to ensure you don’t just stay in Spain, you thrive here.
The €5M Fine: Why the Ministry Program is on Hold
At the heart of the crisis is a legal dispute over how language assistants are classified. For years, assistants were treated as students receiving a study grant. However, the Spanish Labor Department and several courts have now ruled that many assistants are performing the duties of employees and should have been paying into the social security system.
The Penalty: Andalusia was hit with a reported €5 million fine for unpaid social security contributions.
The Freeze: This fine sent shockwaves through regional governments, leading Madrid and Valencia to freeze placements until a new legal framework is agreed upon.
The Visa Block: Without a Letter of Acceptance (Nombramiento), you cannot apply for a student visa. Without that visa, you cannot legally enter or stay in Spain.
The BLC Group Solution: 3 Guaranteed Legal Pathways
You do not have to rely on a collapsing government program. BLC Spain, in partnership with TtMadrid, offers three university-accredited pathways that provide a fully legal student visa, completely independent of the Auxiliares program.
These are not “workarounds.” These are professional programs that qualify you for a student visa with a work permit, giving you the legal security the Ministry currently cannot offer.

FAQ
Can I still live in Madrid if NALCAP is cancelled?
Yes. Unlike the Ministry programs which are tied to regional government budgets and the recent social security disputes, our programs are university-accredited and independent. By enrolling in one of our Master’s in Digital Marketing, MBA, or Advanced TEFL programs, you secure your own legal residency through an “Estudios Superiores” visa that isn’t affected by NALCAP cancellations.
I already paid fees to another agency or program; can I pivot to BLC?
We understand the frustration of having already invested in a program that is now suspended. While we are an independent organization and cannot honor or credit fees paid to third-party agencies (such as CIEE, ConversaSpain, or RVF), we can help you salvage your move to Spain. Our team offers a Priority Assessment for displaced applicants to help you transition into a 100% legal, university-backed program immediately. We provide a ‘door that’s still open’ and will guide you through the process of securing a fresh placement and visa through BLC Group so you don’t lose your chance to live in Madrid this year.
Can I stay in Spain if my auxiliar contract is ending?
Yes, you can modify your status to a student visa through our university programs while remaining in Spain. Just ensure you submit your application within Spain at least 60 days before your current TIE’s expiration date to avoid having to return to your home country.
Have your programs been affected by the recent immigration changes?
Yes, but only in a positive way! Our courses fall under the “estudios superiores” category, which means you aren’t facing as many restrictions visa wise as an auxiliar/language course visa. You can renew for multiple years, you have automatic permission to work, and once your academic studies are complete, you have the option to modify to a work permit.
When should I start the application process?
The sooner the better! The deadline to apply for your new visa is at least 60 days before your current TIE expires, so starting early is always recommended. We highly advise leaving at least 3 months before your contract ends to ensure a smooth transition and to secure your spot in our Master’s or TEFL programs.
When do the programs start? Have I missed the deadline?
Absolutely not. We have 2 intakes per year for our Master’s programs, and 10 intakes for the TEFL programs. Meaning whatever your TIE end date currently is, we’ll be able to find a solution that works with your personal timeline.
Can I work while I study?
You can indeed. Our university-accredited student visa automatically includes authorization to work up to 30 hours per week. This is a significant upgrade from the typical auxiliar grant, allowing you to earn a professional salary while you complete your studies.
Do I have to go back to my home country to change my visa?
As long as you are currently in Spain on a valid student visa (which the auxiliar program provides), we can help you process your new university visa right here in Madrid. You avoid the stress and cost of flights and consulate appointments back home.
What happens after I finish the Master's or TEFL course?
Our programs are designed as career bridges.
For TEFL: You gain lifetime job support where we keep you in contact with all of our network of agencies and academies.
For Master’s: After one year of study, you are eligible to modify your status to a full work permit (Cuenta Ajena) with a job offer, or apply for a Job Seekers Visa to stay and find a professional role in your field. Note: this pathway is only available to students enrolled in university or superior programs, which is exactly what BLC Spain offers. Auxiliares still on their grant status are no longer eligible for this modification since the May 2025 immigration reform.
What is the difference between a "Language School" visa and a "University" visa?
A university-backed visa (like BLC’s) carries more “weight” with Spanish immigration. It qualifies as higher education, which makes the eventual transition to a permanent work permit much more straightforward compared to a basic language school certificate.
I’m worried about the paperwork. Will you help me?
Yes! BLC and TtMadrid provide dedicated bureaucracy support. We provide the specific university enrollment letters required by Extranjería and guide you through the TIE renewal process step-by-step.
